Particular attention has always been given to incorporating procedures for creating the optimum treatment plan as easily and as efficiently as possible with all of the necessary accuracy.
Faster plan calculation by using SIMULTASKING. This unique capability enables the calculation of the various dose matrices as the dosimetrist is manipulating the size or orientation of the beams. This unique capability to constantly calculate the dose distributions is ONLY available with COMPUTE-Rx-PLAN
Faster beam positioning is accomplishes by using the mouse cursor control to click on any beam and the drag it on the screen immediately to any desired position. A any beam parameter can also be controlled precisely by keyboard input.
Faster computer speed using Latest Hardware Technology: All hardware supplied with a complete COMPUTE-Rx-PLAN is always the very latest, highest speed computer hardware.
Easier using the Rooms Eye View to visualize the plan is accomplished by the ability to manipulate and position the viewing positions from any location around the patient.
Easier plan development by using Mnemonic access: The COMPUTERx-PLANÒ uses easy, rapid control of all beam parameters. A single mnemonic keystroke can be used to select then enter any beam parameter quickly and directly.
Easier to setup plans by using Protocols which may be saved and recalled to optimize the dosimetrist time and by using a library of standard shapes which is provided for the dosimetrists to use for training and preplanning.
Accurate dose calculations necessary for clinical application to therapeutic treatment planning is maintained by COMPUTE-Rx-PLAN systems by using proven algorithms to calculate the dose distributions as quickly as possible.
Accurate identification of all beams and structures as well as the relative locations of the tumor or treatment volumes from any viewing position are enabled by Super-graphics visualization.
Accurate Irregular fields can be tailored to the tumor or defined treatment volume by means of the Beams Eye View screens to enter and define the shielding blocks
Accurate CT number to electron density relationship can be specified by the user or default values can be accepted. This capability is necessary to enable to most accurate dose calculations possible from the available CT information and is not possible or the relationship is assumed on many other CT planning systems. Specifying and editing the relationship is uniquely simply and accurate in the PC-3D system.
Accurate inhomogeneity calculations are accomplished by using an exacting pixel-by-pixel ray tracing to determine the primary and scatter contribution at all points with the special ability to modify the scatter contribution for all inhomogeneities. This capability also then automatically compensates for the decrease in scatter caused by beams that flash past the edge surface of the patient. This is a capability which may not even be available in some other systems.
Ease of data assimilation:
Special consideration has been focused on the ease of CT data input. Assimilation of CT information is done in background by downloading from a remote CT scanner via local area network, disk or tapes. Image assimilation and conversion to PC viewing format is done automatically with minimal user involvement.
All assimilated CT images are then available for selection and viewing and are used to define treatment volumes and special interest points. Auto-Tracking™ can automatically track around a pixel density value to define the contour of a structure. The mouse may also be used to specify special areas of interest and to delineate a user defined treatment volume.
The CT windowing capabilities include the ability to do a histogram analysis of the pixel density frequencies. This can be used to select the most optimum CT numbers for viewing or to use to AUTOTRACK™ the various image structures.
Ease of Data Evaluation
The CT image can be Zoomed to magnify a small area of the image and the window and leveling of the image gray scale is easily controlled to enable the detailed visualization of the CT image to discern very subtle difference in density information for detailed tumor structure analysis.
The graphical utility allows modification of all point locations, structure definitions, tumor volumes and provides the ability to strip away extraneous structures from the CT image such as bite blocks, head holders or the table image.
Ease of Treatment Planning Parameter Specification
The software is specifically designed with the user in mind. Our long experience with clinical use at many installed sites has given us an understanding of the requirements of the everyday user. While offering the most advanced 3D capabilities, the systems also still performs the more basic daily tasks in a simple, fast and understandable manner.
The special mnemonic keyboard capability is maintained while adding the use of a mouse to easily manipulate all of the beam treatment parameters quickly efficiently and graphically in the most comprehensible fashion.
Ease of Irregular Field Definition Using Beams Eye View
The COMPUTERx-PLAN® PC-3D™ Beams Eye View (BEV) allows the accurate evaluation of beam placement relative to the patient, all of the associated structures and the tumor volume from the view point of the radiation source through the collimator
This enables the manipulation of the field shape, position and angulation to provide real time virtual simulation to encompass the defined tumor volume as accurately as possible.
Irregular fields may also be optionally entered from the digitizer film input and then recalled and incorporated into the plan.
Ease of Orientation Comprehension
The difficulties of view and orientation comprehension are simplified by providing images of the familiar gantry, table and collimator showing their real physical orientation. These images are combined with a view as seen from any position in the room (the Rooms Eye View).
Super Graphics
High resolution SuperVGA graphics are utilized to provide the detailed viewing of the evolving treatment plan and the COMPUTERx-PLAN®-PC3D™ combines the high resolution SuperVGA graphics with the three-dimensional viewing of the patient anatomy from any direction or orientation
Data acquisition is enabled through the direct input of CT information from any of several modalities including Tape, disk, Local Area Network as well as Film scanners. Also, more routine input via digitizer, mouse and keyboard is possible in all of the Compute-Rx-Plan systems.
Superior 2D and 3D Imaging on the PC
Use of special software enable the PC to provide superior resolutions of up to 1024x768 which approaches the image quality generally reserved for only the most expensive systems. These capabilities easily allow full display of all of the 512x512 CT information and allow complete full windowing and leveling.
These high quality CT images are used to superimpose the dose distribution information to give the dosimetrist and radiotherapist the best comprehension of the results of their 3D treatment planning efforts relative to the patient structures.
Complete Body Surface Contouring
Unique to COMPUTERx-PLAN® PC3D® is the ability to accept full patient body surface contouring by special input from the COMPUTER-COMP® tissue compensator measuring and fabrication systems data files. This allows simple single plane contouring for 2D planning as well as full three-dimensional body contouring for 3D treatment planning.
Special Irregular Field Calculation Features
COMPUTERx-PLAN® can easily calculate accurate doses and treatment times or monitor units for any complex irregular field.
The irregular fields that are used for the irregular field calculations can subsequently be imported into any of the COMPUTE-Rx-PLAN® treatment planning systems for inclusion in the external beam plan.
COMPUTERx-PLAN® has the unique capability of automatically being able to oppose a field and record the sum dose at every point from both of the opposed fields.
COMPUTERx-PLAN® also has the unique capability of being able to automatically add a compensator to an existing irregular field and calculate the dose distribution with the addition of the compensator.
Multi-Station Planning
The comprehensive CT viewing capability combined with optional remote workstation configuration can allow the physician to independently specify treatment volumes while the dosimetrist is planning the configuration of beam shapes and placements for the best possible dose distribution to the specified treatment volumes.
The COMPUTE-Rx-PLAN® PC3D® implements a complete analysis of the beam as shaped by asymmetric jaws, multi-leaf collimators or special beam shaping devices to provide the best possible accuracy under the widest possible treatment parameters.
The algorithms are specifically selected and programmed to give the fastest possible throughput while retaining the accuracy necessary for clinical radiotherapy treatment planning.
Pixel by Pixel Heterogeneity Corrections
The algorithms are capable of pixel by pixel density corrections throughout the entire 3D patient CT data set and incorporate special ray tracing algorithms that trace the beam path in all directions through the volume and through all heterogeneities in all directions.
Accuracy of CT Density Calculations
A special capability is provided to allow the specification of the CT number to electron density relationship. This special and unique capability is necessary to enable to most accurate dose calculations possible from the available CT information and is not possible or assumed on many other CT planning systems. Specifying and editing the relationship is uniquely simply and accurate in the COMPUTE-Rx-PLAN® PC3D® system.
Complete Volumetric Dose Consideration
The overall dose distribution is considered to be the results of many dose distribution modifying parameters. The algorithms independently consider all possible dose modifying parameters and then recombine the results into a very accurate representation of the dose distribution.
1) This includes patient related parameters such as surface obliquity and volumetric inhomogeneities that are within the patient as well as modifiers that are outside the patient like bolus, wedges or compensators.
2) This includes machine related parameters such as beam energy, field size dependence, beam flatness and collimator scatter contribution.
3) This includes field related parameters such the fields shape, the block transmission and edge correction factors and scatter distribution related to the field shape as well as scatter modifications caused by lateral inhomogeneities, air flash and block edges.
All of these various dose distribution determining factors are used in a convolution algorithm to define the final dose distribution in the patient and the results are compared with measured beam data for similarly calculated fields and precisely conformed to provide the most accurate dose distribution algorithm possible --- and this most accurate calculation model is available on the PC platform --- today
.
All of these many special capabilities combined with the exclusive SIMULTASKING™, make the COMPUTERx-PLAN® system especially unique in combining the very fastest PC calculations with the greatest ease of user interaction to give you fast, accurate, complete 2D radiation therapy treatment planning capability at a very reasonable cost.
